For years, college students and young professionals operated under an unwritten loophole: if you forgot to pay your OneCard, Slice, or HDFC bill on the 5th, you assumed you had until the end of the month before CIBIL found out.
That safety buffer no longer exists. Under the RBI’s updated credit reporting mandate, lenders must transmit updated repayment data within 7 calendar days of each reporting cut-off. If your student credit card payment is overdue by just 4 days past the 9th, your delinquency is uploaded to the credit bureau by the 16th.
However, this regulatory shift is a double-edged sword that works heavily in your favor if you are responsible. In the past, clearing a debt or lowering your credit utilization took up to 45 days to reflect. Now, once you pay off a high balance, your CIBIL score can rebound within 7 to 10 days.
Never play chicken with credit card due dates. If you plan to apply for an education loan or a premium credit card next month, pay off your outstanding card balances at least 3 days before the 16th or 23rd to lock in an instant score boost.
