Today — August 25, 2026 — marks exactly 10 years since UPI went live in India. What started as a government experiment is now how over 350 million Indians split bills, pay rent, buy chai, and send money home without ever touching cash.
The growth is genuinely jaw-dropping. In its first financial year (2016-17), UPI processed 1.78 crore transactions. In FY2025-26, that number hit 24,162 crore transactions — a nearly 13,000x jump in a single decade. No payment system anywhere in the world has scaled this fast.
For students, UPI wasn’t just convenient — it was liberating. Before 2016, splitting a ₹400 dinner meant someone fronting cash, WhatsApp reminders, and forgotten debts for weeks. Now it takes 8 seconds. UPI is also now live in 11 countries including Singapore, UAE, and Greece — your Indian UPI ID can work abroad.
Enable UPI Lite (under ₹500 payments, zero PIN, instant) and set up BHIM UPI AutoPay for subscriptions. Most students still don’t use these two features — they’ll save you 10 minutes every week.
