What does this SIP calculator show? Enter a monthly investment, assumed annual return and duration to estimate contributions, growth and future value. Use step-up mode for annual increases, goal mode for a target amount, and inflation adjustment for purchasing power. Built specifically for college students and beginners starting with micro-investments from ₹500/month. An assumed return is an illustrative projection, not a promised mutual-fund return.

How to use the SIP calculator

  1. Select monthly SIP, lump sum or goal-based mode.
  2. Enter an amount you can afford after essential costs and debt repayments (e.g. ₹500 from your internship stipend).
  3. Choose the number of years and an assumed return. Compare several scenarios instead of relying on one optimistic rate.
  4. Switch on annual step-up only if you expect to afford increasing contributions as your salary rises.
  5. Review the total invested, estimated growth and year-by-year schedule. Use inflation adjustment to see an illustrative value in today's money.

SIP calculator for college students India: Starting with zero salary

Most traditional finance portals design mutual fund tools for salaried corporate professionals investing ₹25,000 a month. However, college students in India have a distinct advantage: a 30- to 40-year investment runway. Under current SEBI regulations and AMFI guidelines, any student aged 18 or older with a PAN card and an active savings account (such as a zero-balance SBI BSBD account or Kotak 811 account) can start a Systematic Investment Plan online without submitting salary slips or proof of income.

By automating investments through discount brokers like Groww or Zerodha Coin, students can begin with micro-SIPs starting from ₹100 to ₹500 per month. Read our full walkthrough on how to set up your first ₹500 SIP on Groww or Zerodha and explore our guide to zero-AMC demat accounts for students.

Step-up SIP calculator with inflation for beginners: Beating the real cost of living

A static SIP calculation assumes you will invest the exact same monthly figure for decades. In reality, a student's income does not stay frozen. As you complete college, transition into an internship stipend, and land your first full-time role, your investable surplus grows. That is why our Step-Up SIP feature lets you simulate an annual increase (such as 10% or 15% each year), demonstrating how small progressive top-ups drastically accelerate compounding.

Equally critical for beginners is accounting for purchasing power. India's consumer price inflation historically fluctuates around 5% to 6% annually. A future corpus of ₹50 Lakh in 20 years sounds impressive, but at 6% sustained inflation, its real purchasing power in today's terms is approximately ₹15.6 Lakh. By toggling our Adjust for Inflation switch, beginners can see both their nominal maturity value and their inflation-adjusted real purchasing power side-by-side.

₹500 stipend SIP return calculator: 5, 10, 15 and 20-year wealth projection

Can saving just ₹500 a month from a college internship stipend or pocket money build meaningful wealth? Below is an exact mathematical projection comparing beginning-of-month deposits at an assumed 12% annual return (reflective of long-term broad Indian equity indices like the Nifty 50 TRI) versus a conservative 8% debt scenario and 0% cash holding:

Illustrative compounding schedule for a ₹500 monthly investment (beginning-of-month cash flow; before taxes and exit loads).
Investment periodTotal principal investedAt 8% p.a. (Debt / Conservative)At 12% p.a. (Broad Equity Index)At 15% p.a. (Aggressive Equity)
5 Years (60 mos)₹30,000₹36,983₹41,243₹44,841
10 Years (120 mos)₹60,000₹91,473₹1,16,170₹1,39,329
15 Years (180 mos)₹90,000₹1,72,940₹2,52,288₹3,38,432
20 Years (240 mos)₹1,20,000₹2,94,510₹4,99,574₹7,57,977

The 10% Annual Step-Up Difference: If you start with ₹500 per month during college and increase your contribution by just 10% each year as your income rises (e.g., ₹550/mo in year two, ₹605/mo in year three), your total 20-year investment becomes ₹3,43,650, while your projected corpus at 12% surges to over ₹14,50,000. Monthly SIP formula and calculation assumptions

For a fixed monthly contribution, this tool uses FV = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i). Here P is the monthly payment, i is the entered annual percentage divided by 1,200, and n is the number of months. It assumes contributions at the beginning of each month and a constant monthly rate. At zero growth, future value equals total contributions.

The entered annual rate is divided by 12 for the SIP calculation; it is not converted from an effective annual CAGR. Lump-sum mode uses annual compounding. This difference, payment dates, actual NAV movements and rounding explain why another calculator may show a different estimate. Goal mode solves for a fixed monthly contribution; an annual step-up is applied in monthly SIP mode.

₹2,000 monthly SIP for five years: worked example

Illustrative beginning-of-month payments, nominal rate divided by 12; before tax. Not a return forecast.
Assumed annual rateAmount investedEstimated final value
0%₹1,20,000₹1,20,000
6%₹1,20,000₹1,40,238
10%₹1,20,000₹1,56,165

A lower result is possible, including a loss. Increasing your monthly contribution raises how much you invest; it does not make market returns certain. Step-up comparisons should therefore compare total contributions as well as final values.

SIP, recurring deposit or money kept for emergencies?

A SIP is a way of investing regularly, not a product with a fixed interest rate. An RD is a bank deposit with its own rate, maturity and withdrawal terms. Money needed for fees, rent or emergencies should be accessible; compare the risks and access rules before investing it. A student does not need to invest before they can cover essentials.

SBI Mutual Fund explains SIPs and scheme-specific minimum amounts. AMFI explains that mutual-fund returns are not assured and principal can be lost.

What this SIP estimate excludes

The result does not calculate your personal capital-gains tax, exit loads, actual fund performance or irregular payment dates. A simplified final-value tax calculation cannot correctly age every SIP instalment or apply your wider tax position. Use current scheme documents and tax guidance before redemption. Inflation is an assumption too, and can differ from your own education and living-cost increases.

Frequently asked questions

Can college students in India start a SIP with a ₹500 stipend?

Yes. Leading Indian mutual fund AMCs (including Nippon India, SBI Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential, and HDFC) allow monthly Systematic Investment Plans starting at ₹500, with select funds permitting as low as ₹100. College students aged 18+ need a PAN card and a savings bank account with completed video KYC to start on discount broker platforms like Groww or Zerodha Coin.

How does a Step-Up SIP calculator with inflation help beginners?

A standard SIP calculator assumes your investment amount stays fixed permanently. A step-up SIP calculator lets beginners model annual percentage increments (e.g., boosting monthly savings by 10% as college stipends or entry salaries increase). Enabling inflation adjustment translates future maturity values back into today's purchasing power using India's typical 5-6% inflation rate, so you plan realistic financial goals.

Do college students need a salary slip or proof of income to invest in mutual funds?

No. Mutual fund investments require identity and address verification (KYC), not proof of employment or salary slips. As long as you have a valid PAN card, Aadhaar linked for OTP verification, and a bank account in your name, you are legally eligible to invest in mutual funds in India under SEBI guidelines.

Is 12% a guaranteed SIP return in India?

No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and subject to risk. A 12% annual return is an illustrative benchmark based on historical long-term 10-15 year equity market returns (like the Nifty 50 Index). Actual returns fluctuate, can be negative during market corrections, and are never guaranteed.

Why is a SIP calculator estimate different from XIRR?

This SIP calculator projects expected wealth using fixed mathematical compound interest formulas. Extended Internal Rate of Return (XIRR) is a metric used after you have actually invested to calculate the annualized return across dated, real-world cash flows with varying market purchase prices (NAV).
